Norway

The charter after the Mediterranean

The Norwegian coast runs for thousands of kilometres of fjords, islands and granite peaks, and a yacht is the easiest way to see it: you anchor under walls of rock that no road reaches, and move on while the day-trippers queue for the ferry.

The fleet is small and specialised, from sailing catamarans built for the Arctic to classic superyachts and ice-class expedition ships. Our brokers check which yachts actually cruise here before they go on your shortlist.

The charter after the Mediterranean

Two seasons, two different trips

Summer (June to August) is fjord season. North of the Arctic Circle the sun does not set for several weeks around midsummer: in Lofoten and around Tromsø you can hike, kayak and eat dinner on deck at midnight in full daylight. The air is mild rather than hot and the water is cold, so this is a trip for scenery, walking and fishing rather than long swims.

Winter (November to March) is a different charter. The northern lights show on clear nights from about September to March, and from late autumn orcas and humpback whales follow the herring into the fjords north of Tromsø. Winter yachts pair whale watching and aurora nights with ski touring in the Lyngen Alps.

Where to cruise

The West Norway fjords. Most summer charters start in Bergen or Ålesund. Sognefjord is the longest and deepest fjord in Norway, and Geirangerfjord and Nærøyfjord are UNESCO World Heritage sites: waterfalls straight into the sea and a thousand metres of rock above the mast.

Lofoten. Sharp peaks, white beaches and red fishing cabins at the waterline, above the Arctic Circle. Reine, Henningsvær and Nusfjord are best seen from the water.

Tromsø and the Lyngen Alps. The winter base for whales, northern lights and ski touring; quiet and green in summer.

Svalbard. Glaciers, pack ice and polar bears in the high Arctic, for summer expeditions on an ice-capable yacht.

When is the best time for a yacht charter in Norway?
June to August for the fjords, Lofoten and the midnight sun. November to March for the northern lights, whales and ski touring around Tromsø.
Can I see the northern lights in summer?
No. The summer sky in northern Norway never gets dark enough. The aurora season runs from about September to March, and you need clear skies.
How do we get to the yacht?
Fly to Bergen or Ålesund for the West Norway fjords, and to Bodø, Tromsø or the small Lofoten airports at Svolvær and Leknes for the north, usually via Oslo.
How much does a Norway yacht charter cost?
The crewed yachts we place in Norway range from €21,000 per week for a sailing catamaran to €200,000 per week for a large motor yacht, plus running expenses. Tell us your group and dates and we will give you real numbers.
Can we sail on to Sweden or Denmark?
Yes. The Oslofjord leads straight into the Swedish west coast, and Copenhagen is a few days further south. See our Scandinavia routes at myscandinaviacharter.com.
